Mission of the
Kuumba Ensemble

The Kuumba Ensemble is committed to achieving artistic excellence in its exploration of the African American experience. The ensemble seeks to nurture and enrich the artistic talents of youth and adults who aspire to learn the crafts of drama, dance, music and stage technical competencies. The ensemble is dedicated to creating a community theater that educates, entertains and affects change on a local and national level.  Additionally, the ensemble serves as a conduit to strengthen and enhance the appreciation of all cultures through its community and artistic endeavors.

A Focused Perspective

In the last 17 years, the Kuumba Ensemble has worked diligently to bring Baltimore the finest in theatrical entertainment. We have pulled from the skills, talents and diversity of Baltimore's unique and enriched communities to showcase aspiring professionals and non-professionals who have excelled on stage and beyond.  In fact, many of our members have or are currently starring in renowned stage, screen and television productions.  Additionally, the Kuumba Ensemble has worked with key celebrities such as Lou Myers, best known for his role as Mr. Gaines on Bill Cosby's former television hit series "A Different World," and Kene Holliday, best known for his role as the first African-American detective on the former television show, Matlock. Both actors have facilitated comprehensive drama workshops for the Kuumba Ensemble's former Drama and Cultural Arts Conference.

It has been a fantastic journey building a core base for community artistic expressions and touring productions throughout the Mid-Atlantic theatrical circuit. The Ensemble has done this without fail, and now we are focusing on enhancing our partnerships with a succession of schools, colleges and faith-based institutions to bring you top-notch, original and unforgettable theater. We invite you to join us for what we know will be many evenings of premiere cultural arts expressions.

Future Goals

Within the next three years or sooner, the Kuumba Ensemble expects to move into a stand-alone facility in Baltimore, County. We want to be your one-stop community theater for teaching and showcasing the arts. The time has come for Baltimore County to have a celebrated African American theater and the Kuumba Ensemble intends to be an integral part of bringing this milestone into fruition.
