Kuumba's History . . ..
Founded by Rosalyn M. Gaines, in 1991, the Kuumba Ensemble is the first African American theatrical company based in the southwest corridor of Baltimore County. The Ensemble began its legacy under the auspices of Rev. Dr. Vashti Murphy McKenzie at Payne Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church located in west Baltimore. Since its inception, the Ensemble has grown from a small church-based theatrical troupe into a full-scale non-profit community theater that specializes in productions (secular and non-secular) that uplift, celebrate and preserve the African-American experience. |

Artistic Affiliation
The Kuumba Ensemble enjoys collaborative partnerships with educational entities such as Baltimore City and County Public Schools, Baltimore City Community College and other faith-based facilities where it showcases many of its productions. Until the Ensemble secures its own facility, it will continue to utilize theatrical space throughout the city and county. The location of each production will be listed on our season schedule. The Ensemble theatrical season begins in late January and runs through December.
