Who Are You?

I often ask performers who they are as artists and some are caught off guard with this question of reflection.  From my perspective as an artistic director, I believe that you need to know who you are and what defines you as a person before you can begin to jump inside the skin of characters.  Self-reflection helps you to take a look at your own personality traits and your flaws.  It helps you understand your internal conflicts and struggles.  It helps you assess your vulnerabilty and it moves you closer to the truth of who you are.  You need to know your triggers for joy, sadness, conflict, frustration and the like.  You need to know your limits and your willingness to let life in.  In essence, all you really need is one or two sentences that describes you in the fullness of yourself.  Don't forget to add in why you are drawn into the world of showmanship.  If you can do honest self-reflection, you can certainly transfer that skill to deseciting characters for their traits and flaws to find the motivation you need to give them life and truth on stage.  It's time to undress yourself!  Who Are You?
